Backing out for now
I’ve backed out the migration for now until I can figure out what’s up. So the site is back up on the old server, and nothing lost but some downtime.

DNS has moved for some folks (but not me at home), but I’m getting the default hosting page instead of the real page. I’m still working this one, but I’m stuck doing something else for the next few hours.
Everything should be moved and ready, and I’m just waiting for DNS to change over. Once I see the address change, I’ll bring the site back online and check everything out.
I’ve got MacIDOL down again for the last time before it (hopefully) comes up on the new server.
I’ve got most of the files and the database moved over. Within a couple of minutes, I should finish transferring any last minute file changes, and be ready to activate the site on the new server.
Well, I had issues with the transfer two different ways. Then, as I tossed and turned in my sleep knowing the site was down, I realized I had been thinking inside the nice GUI tools too much, tools that were never designed for sites as large as this.
I have a new approach I’m going to use now, and it won’t require me taking the site down for more than about 30 minutes.
I’ve started the migration to the new server. I’m not getting good feedback that anything is happening, but I’m not getting errors either. Everything seems to have started off OK, so I’m going to cross my fingers and go to bed.
If nothing has happened by morning, I’ll turn the site back on and regroup.
I’m about to start moving MacIDOL to a beefier server. This will probably take the better part of 24 hours, though it might be less. I’m hoping to have it all done before New Year’s Eve.
I’ll keep posting status here.
Upgraded Wordpress today (it sorely needed it!), so I had to change the theme. I’ve also disabled comments, since the spammers seem to enjoy them more than my (non-existent) audience.

I realize this has the potential for getting back into a situation where things always slip and never get done, but they’re still all captured in GTD. It’s really adding a bit of the DIT strategy to whittle down the next actions. It HIGHLY depends on making a good assessment during the weekly review of how much work can be taken on over the next week.
A while back a friend asked me what blogs I follow on a regular basis to keep up with the IT world and professional life in general. I promised to post a list here. I have removed blogs I follow purely for personal reasons. Not all of these may still work.
Are there any I should take a peek at? Please leave a comment, and eventually I may approve it if it doesn’t get buried in the comment spam…
